Local non-profit Green Squirrel have been working with the communities of Adamsdown and Splott in Cardiff to transform a derelict patch of land into a vibrant community space. The site, a former small park and public playground, was closed due to anti-social behaviour and had become overgrown and a site of fly tipping. With support from local councillors, Green Squirrel were able to secure the land and develop a proposal including a building made from recycled containers, business pods providing affordable workshops, a community allotment and a wildlife friendly outdoor space for school visits, play and social activities. Over 1200 members of the community, 19 community organisations and local businesses took part in the engagement process to ensure the facility was right for the community. The idea is now being developed to reality with funding from the Co-Op Foundation and the Landfill Disposals Tax Community Scheme.
