Projects - stepping stones to success

“The real impact of design in the built environment is felt not only through major projects, but by the design of everyday places and buildings.” [1]

There are likely to be a number of projects that will be ‘stepping stones’ to achieving your vision.  Some projects may be ‘Do It Yourself’ projects that need little or no budget; others may need involvement of different stakeholders and funding bids. Consider existing initiatives and projects in the town and consider how the plan can complement these. These ‘quick wins’ will create a buzz and show that your plan is making an immediate impact.

As ideas develop into projects, you will need to think about their feasibility and viability, and ensure they support your vision.  You might need to look at business plans, funding sources, expected outputs, responsibilities and timescale for completion; and you may require the input of specialist consultants with experience in developing projects with local people.  Don’t forget to continue collaboration with your Local Authorities, business groups and other bodies.

You may wish to record the potential projects using a standard format which could include a description of the project, the need, the benefits, timescale, who needs to be involved, costs and funding opportunities.

This section should set out:

  • The ‘stepping stones’ identified and their relation to the vision or themes

  • The objectives that set out how the vision or themes will be achieved

  • Ways of achieving the outcomes (eg: DIY projects, temporary changes, or longer term transformations)

  • Probable timescales (e.g. 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 3-5 years, 5-10 years)

  • Estimated costs and where funding could be found to enable the actions

  • Stakeholders responsible for the actions

  • How success will be measured, through metrics or milestones
