History & heritage

Many places in Wales are fortunate to have characterful and historic settlements and an abundance of built heritage and architecture,as well as powerful stories. Heritage is all around us in the buildings, streets, place names, parks and much more. Exploring local knowledge and history are important stages of research into what makes your town unique. Many places have a long and varied history, with periods of growth and decline as their fortunes have changed. Understanding your town’s past can help to inform your vision for its future, giving a long view of change.

Historic areas may form commercial or shopping centres, visitor attractions or attractive and interesting places to live. Some are protected as Conservation Areas and there may be listed buildings, protected by law. The special character and distinctiveness of Conservation Areas should be protected and enhanced but can be an inspiration for adaptation, alteration or new development and regeneration.

But don’t only focus on its buildings; think about its folklore, myths and stories. Talk to local people about the town’s history, their stories and their experiences in your town.

Questions to consider

  • What is the history of your place? How well is it known and celebrated? Are there physical reminders of this past- buildings, blue plaques, industrial remnants or information boards?

  • Does it have famous associations, myths or legends? What stories do people tell you about the place?

  • What do the Welsh names tell you about your place? Do the street, building or place names give you clues as to the past of parts of your neighbourhood?

  • Are there Conservation Areas or listed buildings?

  • What is it like for visitors on new members of the community?
